Into the Amish Garden

The vegetable gardens planted near where I live are works of art. They are cultivated and cared for by Amish women with such devotion! Here in Northeast Indiana, I live surrounded by an Amish Community. These women and children create beauty, wonder, and a way to feed their families that also feeds our souls.

The gardens have drawn me in. They are almost always in the front of the home or on a side near the road; front and center in their lives. As a result of this very public placement, the gardens have become a part of my life also.

Flowers are a large part of the Amish garden. Above: Peonies blooming in spring.

In an effort to learn more, I began looking for Amish cookbooks and preparing these recipes. Finding out that often the recipe writers assume you know how to cook as the Amish do! So, it has been a fun adventure into the Amish food culture. That is what this blog is about; Amish gardens, the food preparations that comes from the bounty of those gardens and the beauty of the surrounding farms and farm life.

The following recipe is a classic in the Amish Community and is absolutely foolproof and delicious! Enjoy.

Amish Church Peanut Butter Spread

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/4 cup marshmallow fluff

1 cup light corn syrup

Mix all ingredients together. Store, refrigerated in a covered container. Bring to room temperature when serving. Makes about 1 1/2 cup of spread.
